The Six Key Principles of Pilates
Breathing – Learn lateral (ribcage) breathing to support deep core engagement.
Concentration – Focused attention on movement and alignment for maximum benefit.
Control – Intentional movement that builds strength and prevents injury.
Centering – Activating your core as the powerhouse of all movement.
Flow – Linking movements smoothly and with purpose.
Precision – Fine-tuning form to activate the right muscles and protect joints.
Brief History of Pilates
Gain insight into the origins of the Pilates method, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.
Posture & Alignment
Learn about the three natural curvatures of the spine and the importance of pelvic stability and neutral spinal alignment for safe, efficient movement and deeper core engagement.
Core Activation Techniques
Learn how to engage your deep abdominal muscles and pelvic floor. Our deepest abdominal muscle is the Transverse Abdominis - nature's natural corset. This is our magic muscle and wraps around the whole trunk front to back. Learning how to activate this muscle during your Pilates movement (and everyday life) is one of the best ways to increase the quality of your life. It is an essential first line of support for your spine being the closest muscle to your pelvis, spine and ribcage. A master connector between your upper and lower body and it's main function is to stabilize, protect and strengthen the spine.
Pilates Breathing
Pilates breathing - Lateral breath 'rib cage breathing' This breathing technique helps engage deep abdominal muscles, which stabilize the spine. It is a crucial part of Pilates, supporting core strength and spinal alignment. Learn what to do on the Inhale and what to do on the exhale.
Movement
Time to move and experience some staple Pilates exercises in all positions focusing on the key elements we have learned, bringing it all together on the mat.
Workshop Cost: £35 per person, includes refreshments.
